BAN vs SCO, Women’s T20 World Cup 2024: Bangladesh Register Drought-Breaking Win Over Scotland In Tournament Opener

Bangladesh Women’s Cricket Team Breaks Ten-Year T20 World Cup Victory Drought with Opening Win in 2024 Edition

The Bangladesh women’s cricket team ended their decade-long wait for a victory in T20 World Cups by winning their opening match of the 2024 edition in Sharjah on Thursday. Securing a 16-run triumph against Scotland, this marked Bangladesh’s first T20 World Cup win since 2014, as they successfully defended a modest total of 120 runs.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana elected to bat first, hoping the pitch would favor batting. “Justifying my decision to bat first was the belief that the ball would come on nicely,” Sultana said. However, the team struggled to accelerate their scoring, with only Shathi Rani (29) and Sobhana Mostary (36) managing to score beyond 20 runs. Captain Sultana contributed a steady run-a-ball 18, helping Bangladesh set a target of 120 runs for Scotland.

On the bowling front, Scotland’s Saskia Horley delivered an impressive spell, finishing with figures of 2-0-13-3. Despite this, Scotland found it challenging to chase down the target. Only three players—Sarah Bryce, Kathryn Bryce, and Ailsa Lister—managed to reach double figures, with Sarah Bryce top-scoring for the visitors with 49 runs. Although Bryce attempted to hold the innings together, Scotland fell short.

Despite a couple of dropped catches, Bangladesh secured a convincing 16-run victory. Following the win, captain Nigar Sultana expressed satisfaction with the pitch conditions and confidence in her team’s bowling attack.

“This is the kind of wicket we need to be settled on,” Sultana commented during the post-match presentation. “It was not very easy to bat on initially. Building a partnership (between Rani and Mostary) was crucial for us. We had a good total and kept believing in ourselves. We have a very good spin attack, with Marufa also doing well, so we were confident about it.”

Looking ahead, Bangladesh will face England in their next match on Saturday in Sharjah.
