Boston’s Snow Emergency and Parking Ban Lifted; Schools to Reopen Wednesday

Boston’s snow emergency and parking ban were lifted Tuesday evening following a blizzard that dumped 17 inches of snow on the city, Mayor Michelle Wu announced. Boston Public Schools are set to reopen Wednesday.

The snow emergency and parking ban officially ended at 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to Wu’s office. “Thank you to all our city workers for the nonstop hard work to keep everyone safe, and thank you to our residents for doing your part,” the mayor said.

Residents who parked in discounted garages during the emergency must remove their vehicles by 8 p.m. Tuesday to avoid being charged regular rates. Additionally, space savers—items residents place to reserve parking spots—should be removed by 6 p.m. Thursday. After that time, the city’s Public Works Department will remove and discard them. It’s important to note that space savers are never allowed in the South End or Bay Village neighborhoods.

City trash and recycling services will be delayed by one day due to the snow.

Snow removal has been extensive. According to the mayor’s office, “A significant amount of snow was cleared overnight, and large-scale removal began this morning. Crews removed 165 loads totaling 4,620 cubic yards of snow.”

Snow clearing efforts extended beyond the Public Works Department. Mayor Wu also hosted a citywide snow shoveling meetup with volunteers to help clear snow from public walkways and ramps throughout Boston.

Crews will continue snow removal operations throughout the week to keep the city safe and accessible as residents recover from the storm.
