SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The U.S. Coast Guard is currently searching for two missing surfers off the coast of California.
Bystanders reported hearing two surfers yelling for help approximately 200 yards offshore near the Santa Cruz Lighthouse in Santa Cruz around 6:30 p.m. on Friday. At that time, the waves were estimated to be between seven and nine feet high.
In response, the Coast Guard deployed boats and aircrews to search for the missing individuals. Despite extensive efforts covering more than 90 miles, the search was suspended at around 8 a.m. local time on Saturday.
“The decision to suspend a search weighs heavily on all crews involved,” said Coast Guard Chief Warrant Officer 4 Michael Zapawa, search and rescue mission coordinator at Coast Guard Sector San Francisco. “That decision is based on careful evaluation of all available information, including extensive search efforts, environmental conditions, and survivability assessments.”
Anyone with information about the missing surfers is urged to contact the Coast Guard Sector San Francisco command center at 415-399-7399.
