### Sports News: 49ers Eliminate Defending Champions Eagles with 23-19 Wild-Card Victory
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Brock Purdy threw a go-ahead 6-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey late in the fourth quarter, helping the San Francisco 49ers eliminate the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles with a 23-19 wild-card victory on Sunday.
The 49ers will face top-seeded Seattle next weekend for an NFC divisional playoff game. The NFC West rivals split the season series.
Purdy threw for 262 yards and secured the road victory in Philadelphia, a win he failed to get three seasons ago due to an injury in a disappointing NFC title game outing.
Though Purdy had two interceptions by All-Pro cornerback Quinyon Mitchell, the Eagles only managed three points off those turnovers.
San Francisco may head to Seattle without star tight end George Kittle, who was carted off with a right Achilles tendon injury late in the first half.
The Eagles, who won a Super Bowl on a trick play, were foiled by a similar play when wide receiver Jauan Jennings pitched the ball and rolled right, hitting McCaffrey on a 29-yard touchdown. The score, on the first play of the fourth quarter, gave the 49ers a 17-16 lead.
Jennings contributed 66 yards receiving and 48 rushing, in addition to his touchdown pass.
The Eagles managed only Jake Elliott’s 33-yard field goal in the quarter, briefly reclaiming a 19-17 lead.
Philadelphia’s offense was lethargic under embattled offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo, limiting their shot at repeating as champions. Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts threw for only 168 yards and a touchdown, and the Eagles gained just 36 total yards on 16 plays in the third quarter.
Hurts was incomplete on a last-ditch fourth-and-11 attempt with 43 seconds left, ending their final drive.
Scoring was balanced early, with both teams trading touchdowns on their opening drives.
Purdy, constrained by a previously torn ligament in his right elbow from their last meeting, completed three passes for 74 yards on the opening drive, capping it with a 2-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson, who finished with 111 receiving yards.
The Eagles responded with a 1-yard sweep by tight end Dallas Goedert, their reliable red zone target with 11 touchdown receptions. Goedert became the first tight end in NFL postseason history to rush for a score.
They relied on Goedert again on fourth down when Hurts connected with him for a 9-yard touchdown, making the score 13-7.
Eddy Pineiro’s 36-yard field goal narrowed the 49ers’ deficit to 13-10 at halftime.
