A second round of rainfall is expected to hit San Diego County on Friday, and authorities are gearing up for possible flooding.

“We’re anticipating heavy rains and we are fully staffed and well prepared,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Jason Shanley. “We’ll have Lifeguard Swift Water Rescue teams positioned at different fire stations throughout San Diego, as well as sandbags available. We’re good to go.”

Shanley added that lifeguard crews will be on standby during the storm. “If you don’t have to go outside in bad weather, don’t,” he advised. “Try to do what you can to prepare. Also, pay more attention, really look out for things, and drive slower.”

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in multiple California counties, including San Diego, due to the potential risks from heavy rainfall and strong winds.

The recent storm caused power outages on Wednesday, leaving up to 10,000 customers without electricity across San Diego County, from Del Mar to Chula Vista. San Diego Gas & Electric officials reported Thursday that power had been restored to nearly all affected customers, and crews are working to restore service to the rest as quickly as possible.

The National Weather Service forecasts that the next period of significant rain in the San Diego area will arrive Friday. Total rainfall is expected to range from 0.25 to 0.75 inches near the coast and in the valleys, with 2 to 3 inches possible in the mountains. Showers are expected to increase across the region starting around dawn Friday and decrease late Friday night into Saturday morning.

Authorities are urging motorists to drive at reduced speeds and avoid driving through standing water or flooded roadways. Drivers should also avoid parking under trees or power lines due to the risk of falling objects during high winds.

SDG&E officials warn residents to stay clear of downed power lines during the upcoming storm and to call 911 or SDG&E at 1-800-411-7343 if a downed line is spotted.

Stay safe, stay informed, and prepare ahead for the incoming storm.
