A fire broke out early Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 26, killing two people at 211. S. Hanover St. in Cape Girardeau. Firefighters from the Cape Girardeau Fire Department arrived within three minutes after the initial call, but were unable to enter the 1 1/2-story residence because of heavy smoke and fire on the first floor. Fire crews finally entered the residence a few minutes later and, after 40 minutes had elapsed, put the fire out, according to the news release The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office was contacted to investigate after crews located the two victims inside the residence. The investigation is ongoing with assistance from Cape Girardeau Fire Department personnel and the Cape Girardeau Police Department. Off-duty Cape firefighters responded to the scene, as well as firefighters from Jackson and Gordonville fire departments.
