Arrowhead Game Studios, developer behind Helldivers 2, is messing with its players again, this time through the Citizen Surveillance Center on Discord. A dissident-activity channel has been added to the official server where users are regularly being deemed dissident, and their server roles are being changed. A Major Order was issued earlier this month, focused on combating the evils within the system such as “low enlistment rates, high sick day usage, unconventional haircuts, and reports of antisocial behavior.” Players were asked to gather resources in order to expand The Center for Citizen Surveillance & Safety so that a closer eye could be kept on citizens, and make it easier to weed out the dissidents. The order has now come to an end, and the addition of the dissident-activity channel seems to be part of the expansion of the Surveillance Center. However, players are suspicious of the changes, and have begun sharing their theories on social media. One Reddit user asks about the “dissident crisis” saying that bots have been attacking the Center. “Attacking the Federation has proven relatively ineffective for the bots. So what if they’ve stepped up their game, and targeted us where it hurts,” they write. In another thread, a user writes, “isn’t it just a LITTTTLE suspicious that the Citizen Surveillance just so happens to have a red eye? Just like the Automatons? I’m almost betting they hacked into our systems. I guess Super Earth propaganda works.” Responses like this are why the dissident crisis is exploding right now. The recent Helldivers 2 patch notes ends with the message, “we also kindly ask you to put a ‘fiery’ red circle around the date December 2 as we will have some ‘buzzing’ updates for you all!” It seems that Arrowhead has something spicy planned for us in the next few weeks.
