The Mexican corridos group Los Tigres del Norte delivered a powerful and political message on the Latin Grammys stage on Thursday night. Against a backdrop of videos showing teary-eyed Mexican people alongside American and Mexican flags, the group performed their sociopolitical single, “La Lotería.”

Named after the traditional Mexican board game, “La Lotería” addresses important topics such as immigration and offers a critique of President Donald Trump’s criminal past. The song features poignant lyrics like “El diablo ya lo mandan a la corte” (They’re even sending the devil to court) and “Nuestra gente se rebela en estos tiempos” (Our people are rebelling in these times).

The visuals playing behind Los Tigres del Norte at the Latin Grammys further underscored the song’s message, featuring street signs that read “immigration reform ahead” and images of families crossing borders. In the audience, artists including Bad Bunny watched attentively, nodding along to the song’s rhythm.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times’ De Los earlier this year, Los Tigres del Norte emphasized the timely nature of “La Lotería.” They said, “The most important thing is that we now see that [‘La Lotería’] comes out at a critical moment. We took on the task of recording and having this number, and hopefully the public will analyze it and reflect on each of the themes touched upon in this song, because there are several—and each lotería card has a different meaning for all of us.”

The impact of “La Lotería” was recognized at the Latin Grammy Awards, where the song won best regional song. Additionally, the eponymous EP that features the track took home the award for best norteño album.

The night’s most decorated artists were Bad Bunny, who walked away with five awards—including album of the year for his politically and culturally empowering “Debí Tirar Más Fotos”—and Ca7riel and Paco Amoroso, who also earned five wins.
