RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Jakob Chychrun scored his 100th career goal, Alex Ovechkin added his 901st into an empty net, and the Washington Capitals defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday night.

Brandon Duhaime and Dylan Strome also scored for the Capitals, while Logan Thompson made 30 saves. Despite the victory, Washington has won just two of their last eight games. John Carlson contributed two assists, extending his points streak to four games, with two goals and four assists during that span.

For the Hurricanes, Nikolaj Ehlers scored his third goal of the season, and goaltender Frederik Andersen stopped 24 shots. The game featured a heated first period, with a scrum sparked by Nic Dowd after he collided with Andersen while chasing the puck behind the net. This incident led to 18 minutes of penalties, contributing to a total of 22 penalty minutes in the feisty opening period.

The game settled down after intermission, with only 12 more penalty minutes called over the final 40 minutes. Andersen left the game with about five minutes remaining in the third period after Hurricanes captain Jordan Staal accidentally collided with his own goalie while pursuing the puck. Pyotr Kochetkov finished the game but did not face a shot.

The Hurricanes’ four-game winning streak came to an end with this loss.
