The Cleveland Browns coaching staff continues to tune out calls from the fanbase to give Shedeur Sanders a chance to start over the current No. 1 quarterback, Dillon Gabriel. This trend appears set to continue into Week 11.
Gabriel delivered an adequate performance against the New York Jets on Sunday, avoiding major mistakes while throwing for 167 passing yards and two touchdowns. Despite his efforts, the Browns fell short in a 27-20 defeat, dropping their record to 2-7 on the season.
The former Oklahoma product is now 1-4 in his five starts, a record that hardly inspires confidence in a turnaround anytime soon with him under center. At this point, there seems to be very little downside to making a change at quarterback to explore what Sanders might bring to the table. However, the Browns are not ready to make that move.
Speaking with reporters after Sunday’s game, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski addressed the quarterback situation moving forward. According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, Stefanski confirmed that Dillon Gabriel will start again in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens.
Unless Stefanski truly views Gabriel as the franchise quarterback, it’s difficult to understand the rationale behind sticking with him, especially given the struggles on offense this season. Whatever the reasoning, Stefanski has consistently shown he is willing to stand firm on his decisions, regardless of their popularity.
With the Browns’ current performance, changes may need to happen quickly for Stefanski to secure his position beyond the 2025 season. It will be interesting to see if the organization reassesses the quarterback room should the team’s struggles continue with Gabriel under center.
