Peak has proven to be a surprisingly big winner for indie studios Aggro Crab and Landfall. With more and more groups of friends jumping in and trying to survive the harrowing climbs ahead, the developers have released the game’s latest free update.

The Roots update introduces a brand-new biome inspired by the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest. While Peak still challenges players to climb, the setting has shifted — now, players find themselves scaling towering trees in a dense, vibrant forest. These trees present a unique challenge, no matter how large your party is.

Adding to the intensity, giant insects have made their home in this new biome. Players must beware of colossal spiders that can cocoon adventurers in webs and drop them from great heights, leading to potentially long and perilous falls. On the bright side, the forest offers native mushrooms that players can choose to munch on—though this comes with risks. Consuming these mushrooms may result in some unusual side effects, including a chance of turning into a zombie-like state.

The Roots update also brings exciting changes to Peak’s cooking system. Players can now observe effects on non-food items when they are placed in a fire. While the developers haven’t revealed what these effects are, this mysterious feature encourages players to experiment and discover surprising outcomes for themselves.

In addition, players can now cook the poison out of berries, making them safe to eat. However, this method does not work on mushrooms, so caution is strongly advised when foraging and consuming fungi in the Roots biome.

Stay safe, keep climbing, and happy exploring in Peak’s new and thrilling Roots update!
