The Washington Post’s walls of editorial independence have been breached. The once-great newspaper has endorsed Donald Trump’s controversial plan to replace part of the White House with a $300 million ballroom. This endorsement raises serious questions, especially given that Amazon’s Jeff Bezos — who also owns The Washington Post — is one of the donors to the ballroom project.

This morning, the editorial appeared on the front page of The Washington Post’s website. It marks yet another troubling moment for the paper, which has been declining as top writers and editors exit, only to be replaced by loyalists. The unsigned editorial reads:

“Trump joins a long list of presidents who have left their imprint on the White House. Theodore Roosevelt replaced greenhouses to construct the West Wing. William Howard Taft constructed the first Oval Office in 1909. Richard M. Nixon converted a swimming pool into the press briefing room in 1970. The modern East Wing wasn’t even built until World War II to cover up an underground bunker. Harry S. Truman gutted the White House interior and added the balcony that bears his name. Purists decried it. Now it’s a hallmark.”

The editorial continues:

“The White House cannot simply be a museum to the past. Like America, it must evolve with the times to maintain its greatness. Strong leaders reject calcification. In that way, Trump’s undertaking is a shot across the bow at NIMBYs everywhere.”

This endorsement is beyond alarming. The Post’s decision to align itself with Trump echoes a broader media trend. At TIME Magazine, for example, Trump reportedly pressured editors to change a cover photo and headline to present him in a better light. Meanwhile, CBS was notably the only major network that failed to cover Trump’s pardon of former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao, who was found guilty of money laundering on Thursday, October 24, 2025.

These incidents seem to be just the beginning. It is already concerning that Trump allies David and Larry Ellison now own Paramount Pictures and its subsidiaries. Should the Ellisons acquire Warner Bros. — including CNN — the consequences for independent journalism and media trustworthiness would be severe.

The undermining of editorial standards and media independence in such a way threatens not just journalism but the very information ecosystem that supports democratic discourse. The Washington Post’s latest editorial stance is a stark reminder of how far we have fallen.
