SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — We’re imagining the future of San Francisco, from the skyline to the rail line. On Friday, real estate company Prologis updated the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors on the San Francisco Railyards project.

The project aims to increase Caltrain service, connect with future high-speed rail, and build housing and community spaces.

Ryan Ludwig knows how to get around. He’s lived in San Francisco since 2018 and uses Caltrain daily to commute to his job in San Mateo.

“I love taking Caltrain to work. It’s always fun to look at the highway and be like, ‘Hahaha, sucks to be a commuter right now,’” Ludwig said.

Ludwig loves all forms of transportation and stays informed.

“I’ve always been fascinated with California high-speed rail,” Ludwig said.

He is well versed in the Railyards project, a transit-oriented development that would stitch together SoMa, Mission Bay, and Showplace Square. The project covers half a mile of King Street, from 4th Street to 7th Street. It potentially brings enhanced Caltrain services, housing, community spaces, and a connection to future high-speed rail.

“I think it’s a great idea. A lot of other countries have high-speed rail; getting from here to LA in an eco-friendly manner is great,” Ludwig added.

Prologis, the company leading the project, provided an update to the Transbay Joint Powers Authority Board of Directors. They estimate the project is likely more than three years out.

“Infrastructure projects, they take time,” Ludwig noted, highlighting the need for time and money to build the necessary rail infrastructure.

Lukas B., who moved to San Francisco from Europe, supports the development.

“We could use a lot more restaurants, cafes, more life in SoMa,” he said, explaining that while he loves San Francisco as a whole, he believes the area near his office could use some improvement.

As for the prospect of leaving work on a Friday, hopping on Caltrain, and then catching high-speed rail for a weekend in LA?

“It’s so far out. It’s more a fantasy than a reality,” Lukas said.
