Indore, Madhya Pradesh: In a decisive move to curb rodent infestations and enhance hygiene standards, Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital administration has imposed a strict ban on the distribution of food within the hospital premises. This comes weeks after two newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) tragically died due to rat bites.
Dr. Arvind Ghanghoria, Dean of MGM Medical College, issued an official order on Wednesday prohibiting the entry of any food items inside the hospital campus. “Food items should not be brought inside the hospital under any circumstances,” he emphasized in his directive.
To ensure compliance, security personnel at all hospital gates have been instructed to conduct thorough checks. Furthermore, organizations or individuals providing meals to patients or attendants are required to distribute food only outside the hospital premises.
The MY Hospital superintendent, along with the private maintenance agency Agil Company, has been tasked with enforcing this ban. Additionally, the dean has prohibited the setting up of food stalls or vendors inside the hospital campus, citing concerns over hygiene and the attraction of rodents.
The stringent measures follow two heartbreaking incidents involving newborns admitted to the NICU shortly after birth, who succumbed to rat bites. According to hospital sources, rat infestation at MY Hospital is widespread, with staff reporting frequent sightings of a large rat within the NICU prior to the incidents.
“The presence of rats has been a long-standing problem, but these incidents have exposed the scale of negligence,” a hospital insider revealed.
In response, the administration has instructed pest control agencies to work under close supervision to ensure complete eradication of rodents from critical areas such as the NICU, wards, and kitchens.
Public outrage has been mounting since news of the deaths emerged, with citizens demanding accountability for what many describe as a preventable tragedy. The hospital management has pledged to take “strict and immediate action” to prevent any such occurrences in the future.
As part of the new directives, an extensive sanitation and pest control drive has been launched, which includes:
