Sam Konstas Falters in Sheffield Shield Ahead of Ashes

By Gaurav Tripathi | Oct 04, 2025 | 09:17 am

Sam Konstas’s bid for an Ashes call-up got off to a disappointing start as he was dismissed for just four runs on the first day of New South Wales’s Sheffield Shield match against Western Australia in Perth. The left-arm seamer Joel Paris trapped the right-hander in front of the stumps with a swinging delivery, leaving NSW struggling early at 1-9.

Match Challenges for Konstas

The match at the WACA proved tough for Konstas, who survived two close LBW calls and a difficult dropped catch. Wicketkeeper Joel Curtis failed to hold on to a challenging one-handed chance off Konstas’s inside edge. With pressure mounting, Konstas will need to make a significant impact in the upcoming matches to retain his spot as an opener in the longest format.

It’s worth noting that Konstas recently scored a First-Class hundred while playing in India, highlighting his potential on foreign soil.

Konstas’s Test Career So Far

Konstas made a stunning debut in the 2024 Boxing Day Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The 20-year-old impressed with a brisk 60 off 65 balls in his maiden outing, skillfully facing top-quality bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.

However, since that promising start, he has struggled to reach 30 runs in each of his subsequent nine innings. His current Test statistics stand at 163 runs from five Tests at an average of 16.30.

Jake Weatherald Shines Against Queensland

Meanwhile, Tasmanian opener Jake Weatherald began his summer on a high note, scoring an impressive 67 off just 99 balls against Queensland at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field. Despite Tasmania’s early setback at 3-33 in the 12th over, Weatherald steadied the innings alongside captain Jordan Silk. The duo put together a valuable 80-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Weatherald reached his half-century in only 81 balls before falling to experienced pacer Michael Neser. Since last summer, Weatherald has averaged a remarkable 57.62 in first-class cricket for Tasmania and Australia, making him a strong contender for a Test call-up.

Other Notable Performances

Tigers all-rounder Beau Webster missed the Sheffield Shield match due to a minor ankle injury. At the Adelaide Oval, South Australian opener Nathan McSweeney was dismissed for a duck after facing 21 balls, with Victorian pacer Mitchell Perry causing significant damage to the home side’s batting lineup.

As the Sheffield Shield season progresses, players like Konstas and Weatherald will be keen to build form and make compelling cases for selection ahead of the upcoming Ashes series.
