Japan’s Supreme Court Upholds Constitutionality Of 2.06-To-1 Vote Disparity

The Supreme Court’s Second Petty Bench, presided over by Chief Justice Akira Ojima, delivered a significant ruling on September 26th regarding the electoral system for the House of Representatives.

The court upheld the constitutionality of the current seat apportionment system, despite concerns about vote value disparities. Specifically, the ruling addressed the maximum disparity of 2.06-to-1 observed in the value of votes cast during last October’s general election.

This decision affirms the existing framework for electoral representation, maintaining the status quo ahead of future elections.
