The Kansas City Chiefs’ season will officially come to an end this Sunday, but the team has likely had one eye on a rare early vacation in the Caribbean ever since their elimination from playoff contention. However, those who will likely have to remain behind and stay focused in the coming weeks are the Chiefs’ assistants and staff—some of whom could be in line for external promotions to coordinator or even head coaching positions.

One individual in prime position to land one of the coveted head coaching roles for what would be the second time in his career is Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. According to The Draft Network’s Jaime Eisner, Nagy is the favorite to become the next head coach of the Tennessee Titans.

“Odds to be the Tennessee Titans’ next head coach,” Eisner wrote in a post on X:
– Matt Nagy (+250)
– Mike McCarthy (+275)
– Arthur Smith (+500)
– Jesse Minter (+700)
– Joe Brady (+800)
– Kliff Kingsbury (+800)
– Steve Sarkisian (12/1)
– Brian Flores (14/1)
– Klint Kubiak (16/1)
– Mike Kafka (16/1)
– Robert Saleh (18/1)

### Matt Nagy Favored to Land the Titans Head Coaching Role

Nagy first emerged on the NFL scene as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator from 2016 to 2017 before he was hired by the Chicago Bears as head coach. During his tenure with Chicago, he oversaw the rise—and eventual struggles—of the #2 overall pick, Mitchell Trubisky. Nagy was ultimately fired after the 2021 season.

He returned to the Chiefs in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant and was promoted back to his old offensive coordinator role in 2023 after Mike Kafka left to become the Washington Commanders’ offensive coordinator.

Since Nagy’s return, the Chiefs have experienced some sub-par regular season offensive performances, despite reaching two Super Bowls and winning one. This offensive downturn has been partly attributed to the departure of All-Pro wide receiver Tyreek Hill.

Nonetheless, Nagy’s experience as a head coach—including making the playoffs twice in Chicago—and his tenure under offensive guru Andy Reid make him a surprisingly appealing candidate in a year with few standout prospects to fill head coaching vacancies.

### Where Would the Chiefs’ Offense Go Without Matt Nagy?

The short answer is that the offense would likely remain about the same, if not improve. Nagy did not radically change Andy Reid’s offensive scheme upon his return. In fact, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has not been a serious MVP contender since Nagy took over as offensive coordinator in 2023, despite having won the award twice in the five years prior.

As the Chiefs prepare for the offseason, all eyes will be on Nagy’s future and whether he will take the next step in his coaching career as a head coach once again.
