The attorney representing a MAGA clerk convicted of state charges related to efforts to subvert the 2020 election expressed elation on Thursday after President Donald Trump announced a “pardon” for his client, according to a new report.
Tina Peters, the former county clerk in Mesa County, Colorado, was convicted on seven charges for her actions aimed at helping Trump allies access the county’s voting systems. In 2024, she was sentenced to nine years in state prison.
In a Truth Social post on Thursday, Trump announced he was granting a “full Pardon for her attempts to expose Voter Fraud in the Rigged 2020 Presidential Election.” He added, “Democrats have been relentless in their targeting of TINA PETERS, a Patriot who simply wanted to make sure that our Elections were Fair and Honest. Tina is sitting in a Colorado prison for the ‘crime’ of demanding Honest Elections.”
Elizabeth Landers, White House correspondent for the PBS NewsHour, shared on X that she spoke with Peters’s attorney, Peter Ticktin, about Trump’s announcement.
“He had not heard this news until I read him the president’s post over the phone,” Landers wrote. “His reaction: ‘Freaking fantastic!'”
However, Landers also pointed out that Trump does not have the authority to pardon individuals convicted of state crimes. When asked about the legal implications of the pardon, Ticktin responded, “The Constitution really needs to be read and understood through the eyes of the founders and what did they mean when they wrote it.”
The situation highlights ongoing debates about the scope of presidential pardon powers, especially concerning state-level convictions.
