**Top Doubles Coach Calvin Betton Criticizes ATP for ‘Obsessed’ Focus on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner**
Calvin Betton, a prominent doubles coach known for mentoring Henry Patten and Luke Johnson, recently voiced strong criticism of the ATP’s approach to doubles tennis coverage. Patten, one of Betton’s top players, is a two-time Grand Slam winner whose titles were both earned under Betton’s guidance. Johnson, meanwhile, is an emerging talent who reached a career-high ranking of World No. 28 earlier this year.
During an appearance on the Chip n Charge Tennis Podcast, Betton expressed frustration at the ATP’s disproportionate focus on singles stars such as Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, accusing the organization of neglecting doubles events.
“There is zero marketing for this [doubles]. Zero marketing,” Betton said. “They’re obsessed with, whenever Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner cross each other in a corridor, they’ll stick a camera there and go ‘two legends meet’. This happens every week, there is no reason for you to get it on camera all the time, it’s pathetic.”
Betton also revealed that the ATP recently rejected a players’ proposal aimed at increasing exposure for doubles tennis. According to him, the doubles players had planned to run their own doubles-only Instagram account, funding it themselves with contributions from the top 100 ranked doubles players.
“All the doubles players had an agreement within themselves where they said, ‘top 100 we’ll all stick in two grand each and we’ll pay someone to run it and we’ll pay for marketing’,” Betton explained. “They wouldn’t let them do it.”
In addition, Betton mentioned that the ATP even removed a social media post he and Henry Patten had shared following their victory at the Paris Masters, highlighting further challenges doubles players face in gaining recognition.
Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz recently spoke about his doubles experience at a press conference, reflecting on playing alongside tennis legend Rafael Nadal.
“I think we played great tennis in doubles, even if we are not used to playing doubles very often,” Alcaraz said. “A little bit disappointing at the end, because we thought that we could do it better, but in general, we were happy. And obviously, talking about myself, I reached my dream, my dream came true, playing doubles alongside Rafa.”
Looking ahead, Alcaraz returned to the doubles court in 2025, partnering with Britain’s Emma Raducanu in the mixed doubles event at the US Open.
