Lately, I’ve found myself scrolling through everything Amazon Prime Video offers out of sheer curiosity. They keep a freshly updated mix going, and I appreciate that as a voracious consumer who’s always looking for something new. The options for this weekend’s binge-watch include living vicariously through a teen-aged spy with extraordinary talents, becoming embroiled in the dramedy between two clashing cops with strong personalities, and kicking back to laugh at someone else’s increasingly poor decisions for a change. I know where I’m starting! 3 Alex Rider If James Bond had a rebellious son wrapped up in espionage, it would be this kid. Based on the novel series of the same name by Anthony Horowitz, Alex Rider is an excellent British spy thriller revolving around a teenager. It’s also the first scripted British Amazon Original series, and how it manages to be both thrillingly modern and nostalgically old-school, I’ll never know. Ordinary London teenager Alex Rider (Otto Farrant, of The White Queen) has experienced the loss of his parents, and now he finds himself facing the puzzling death of his uncle. When he is recruited by a subdivision of the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6), he develops and uses skills he never had to become an extraordinary spy. His task is simple: infiltrate the places that other spies-older spies-aren’t able to access, such as a controversial corrective academy for the wayward, which strictly targets the offspring of the uber wealthy. Don’t let the fact that the Alex Rider series of novels are primarily aimed at young adults put you off. Grown adults will find the show’s grounded approach just as entertaining, thanks to its super-strong character development and solid performances, which are nicely woven together with drama, suspense, and plenty of gripping action over the course of three seasons. There’s also a fair share of teenage antics thrown in. It takes a minute to find its footing, but once it does, this story takes off and doesn’t look back. 2 Pretty Hard Cases A three-season Canadian police procedural doubling as a crime dramedy, Pretty Hard Cases follows two female detectives in Toronto as they work to solve the city’s toughest gun, gang, and drug crimes, despite their very different personalities. They’re indelibly mismatched, but it works in their favor. Sam Wazowski (Meredith MacNeill, of Baroness Von Sketch Show) is an uptight, by-the-book guns-and-gangs detective. On the other hand, Kelly Duff (Adrienne C. Moore, of Orange is the New Black) is a streetwise narcotics detective. At first, the two clash like thunder and lightning, but before long, their chemistry emerges, and they find themselves standing on common ground, making room for each other’s individual skills as they navigate their law enforcement challenges. The series centers on both their professional and personal relationship as it unfolds and develops within a flawed system. Pretty Hard Cases takes pride in its successful effort to seamlessly blend action and drama with some top-notch comedic elements. It features thoughtful, complex characters and a stellar cast full of outrageous talent, so trust me when I tell you that you’ll want to make time for this certified fresh series that boasts a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score. 1 The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret Look, we’re all human, and at some point in our lives, we all make a poor decision-or a few of them. It’s not funny when we do it, but it can be funny to watch others do it, which is why I’ll be jumping head-first this weekend into The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret. The three-season black comedy series follows a part-time office temp named Todd Margaret (David Cross, of Arrested Development). A compulsive liar for convenience, he lacks common sense and is completely unqualified to do or sell anything. When he bluffs his way into a senior sales position and is tapped to lead the London office of a new energy drink, Todd faces a slew of misadventures, which he sees fit to navigate with more lies. Awesome. The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret looks to be a refreshingly hilarious comedy of errors, so if you loved the humor in Arrested Development, chances are this show is your next new obsession. David Cross not only stars in it, but he also created the series. Additionally, it features regular performances by Sharon Horgan (Bad Sisters), Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners), Amber Tamblyn (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants), and Will Arnett. Jon Hamm and Jack McBrayer star in guest roles.
