Kansas freshman sensation Darryn Peterson has been dealing with a hamstring issue that’s been lingering longer than initially reported. Although the injury was first mentioned a few days ago, it turns out Peterson has been playing through pain for some time. KU coach Bill Self described the injury as a “tight” hamstring but emphasized that the team is being cautious with his recovery.
Peterson saw action against UNC but experienced some difficulties, leading to him sitting out the games against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Princeton. The latter was a closer contest than it might have been had Peterson been on the court.
Looking ahead, it’s uncertain whether Peterson will be available for the upcoming matchup against Duke at Madison Square Garden, which would be a significant loss for Kansas. As former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski often said, it’s preferable to face an opponent at full strength — so that a victory truly means beating them at their best.
Even without Peterson, the Jayhawks have strong contributors stepping up. Point guard Melvin Council is performing well, Flory Bidunga—a big man once pursued by Duke and now a much more productive sophomore—and the athletic Tre White, who transferred from Louisville two years ago, are all valuable assets.
Our best guess is that Peterson will recover enough to play, and we certainly hope that will be the case. However, Coach Self may decide the risk is too great and opt to hold him out. We should know the decision soon.
