One sold-out Diane Keaton memorial screening in Santa Monica went ahead without its biggest draw. On Sunday night, *Something’s Gotta Give* director Nancy Meyers canceled a long-awaited public appearance at the last minute. She had been set to moderate a discussion on the film but has not appeared in public since Keaton died on October 11.
The group running the screening, American Cinematheque, sent out a last-minute notice to viewers. The showing took place at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.
*Something’s Gotta Give*, starring Diane Keaton as a woman caught in a love triangle between two men played by Jack Nicholson and Keanu Reeves, is widely considered one of the best romantic comedies ever made. Keaton was nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars when the movie came out in 2003.
Upon Keaton’s passing, Nancy Meyers released a heartfelt tribute statement on her Instagram page. She wrote:
> “As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years; at times over those years, she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences. As a filmmaker, I’ve lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of.
>
> We all search for that someone who really gets us, right? Well, with Diane, I believe we mutually had that. I always felt she really got me, so writing for her made me better because I felt so secure in her hands.”
Meyers also acknowledged that Keaton’s talent for humor extended far beyond her films. She referenced Keaton’s classic roles in movies directed by filmmakers like Warren Beatty and Woody Allen.
> “Diane did exactly the same for them because that is what she does. She goes deep. And I know those who have worked with her know what I know. She made everything better.
>
> She was like nobody ever, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her changed my life. Thank you, Di. I’ll miss you forever.”
The memorial screening was a poignant reminder of Diane Keaton’s incredible impact on film and on those who knew her personally.
