**Today in SCV History: November 14, 1935**

On November 14, 1935, Saugus voters made a pivotal decision that reshaped local education for decades to come. They approved a $22,000 construction bond measure, paving the way for a brand-new, modern Saugus Elementary School. This new facility would replace the aging 1908 wooden schoolhouse that had served the community since the earliest days of the Saugus School District.

The vote came after years of challenges. The original schoolhouse, built in 1910 on Charles and Anita Kellogg’s farm, had undergone multiple expansions as enrollment grew. The district faced profound tragedy in 1928 when the St. Francis Dam disaster claimed an estimated 17 to 22 Saugus students and staff members. By 1935, the campus was outdated, overcrowded, and no longer meeting the community’s needs.

Just months earlier, voters had narrowly rejected a proposal for additional operating funds—a close 7 to 6 vote against a plan to raise $1,500 per year. However, the push for a new school proved far more compelling.

The November 14 bond measure passed, unlocking not only local funds but also a $17,181 Works Progress Administration (WPA) grant secured in early 1936. Together, the district invested $34,913 to build a completely new Saugus School.
