Former NFL star players are increasingly making their mark in the college coaching space, and a former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback could be next in line to join their ranks.

Hall of Famer Deion Sanders got the movement started when he found immediate success at Jackson State before eventually taking over as the head coach at Colorado. Following in his footsteps, former NFL standout running back Eddie George landed a head coaching job at Tennessee State before moving on to helm the Bowling Green football program.

But the trend doesn’t stop there. Former NFL wide receiver DeSean Jackson and quarterback Michael Vick are currently leading Delaware State and Norfolk State, respectively. The two recently faced off in a thrilling game that ended with Delaware State securing a 27-20 victory.

Now, another former NFL quarterback appears poised to enter the college coaching arena. According to NFL insider Josina Anderson, former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kordell Stewart is looking to toss his hat into the ring. Stewart has hired Young Money APAA Sports as his representation as he seeks a college football head coaching position.

Anderson reports, “Sources say there’s interest in the open Colorado State job, & that Stewart has already assembled a veteran staff of prominent NCAA & NFL coaches.”

This opportunity comes in the wake of Colorado State’s recent coaching change. On October 19, the university announced it had fired head coach Jay Norvell. In an official statement, Athletic Director John Weber said, “Jay is a leader of the highest character who cares deeply about developing his players as athletes, students, and young men. However, as we prepare to join the Pac-12 Conference next year, we need to position our program to compete at the highest level. While we’ve seen progress, a change in leadership is necessary to achieve the sustained excellence our program requires. We are continuing to invest and work hard to ensure that the football program and the next head coach have the resources needed to capitalize on this historic opportunity.”

Currently, Kordell Stewart is serving as the voluntary offensive coordinator at South Forsyth High School in Georgia while preparing for his potential jump to the college ranks.

With former NFL stars increasingly stepping into coaching roles across college football, Stewart’s move could add another exciting chapter to this growing trend. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if he lands the Colorado State job and how he shapes the program’s future.
