Todd Howard, director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios, has provided an update on the development of the long-awaited *The Elder Scrolls 6*, confirming that the game is “still a long way off.”
The game was first announced in June 2018, and since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting more information. However, Howard urged patience during a recent interview with GQ, coinciding with the release of *Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition*. He stated, “I’m preaching patience. I don’t want fans to feel anxious.”
Howard acknowledged the lengthy gap between *The Elder Scrolls* titles, saying, “The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let’s be clear. But we wanted to do something new with *Starfield*. We needed a creative reset.” He also mentioned that the studio conducted a “big play test” earlier this week, indicating steady progress in development.
Discussing Bethesda’s approach to releasing games, Howard revealed that he prefers to “just announce stuff and release it” when ready. “My perfect version—and I’m not saying this is going to happen—is that it’s going to be a while and then, one day, the game will just appear,” he explained.
Bethesda recently surprised fans by shadow dropping *The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered* in April for current-gen consoles and PC without any formal announcement. When asked if *The Elder Scrolls 6* might receive a similar surprise release, Howard didn’t rule out the possibility. “You might say that was a test run. It worked out well,” he said.
In the meantime, Bethesda continues to support its existing titles, having launched several games including *Starfield*, *Fallout 76*, and *Fallout 4 Anniversary Edition*—the latter compiling the base game, all six expansion packs, and additional community content.
Fans eager for more news on *The Elder Scrolls 6* will have to wait a bit longer, but according to Todd Howard, the studio is steadily moving forward. For now, he encourages everyone to stay patient and enjoy Bethesda’s current offerings.
