Drug overdoses have killed more than a million people in the U.S. since 1999, with the majority of fatalities driven by opioids, including the supremely powerful synthetic painkiller fentanyl.

More than one million American deaths from illegal drug overdoses since 1999 surpass the combined American casualties in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.

Controversy has arisen as some members of Congress criticize President Trump for his aggressive actions against drug smuggling vessels, including sinking them. Supporters argue that such strong measures deserve commendation.
