SEOUL, Nov. 7 (Yonhap) — President Lee Jae Myung’s approval rating rose this week to 63 percent, driven by positive assessments of his diplomacy and the recent Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) gathering, a poll showed Friday.
In a Gallup Korea survey of 1,002 adults conducted from Tuesday through Thursday, positive evaluations of Lee’s performance increased by 6 percentage points compared to the previous week. This marks the first time in about six weeks that Lee’s approval rating has surpassed the 60 percent mark.
Meanwhile, the negative assessment of Lee fell by 4 percentage points, dropping to 29 percent.
Among the respondents who gave a positive evaluation, 30 percent cited diplomacy as the main reason, followed by 13 percent who mentioned the economy, and 7 percent who pointed to the APEC gathering held in Gyeongju last week.
On the sidelines of the APEC summit, President Lee held a series of bilateral meetings with key leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
During his talks with President Trump, the two leaders reached a breakthrough deal finalizing the details of Seoul’s US$350 billion investment pledge in exchange for lower U.S. tariffs.
In terms of party approval ratings, the ruling Democratic Party stood at 40 percent, down 1 percentage point from the previous week. Support for the main opposition People Power Party remained unchanged at 26 percent.
The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level.
