Former State Representative Byron Callies has announced that he will be seeking re-election for the District 5 seat in the House of Representatives, a position he was originally elected to in 2022. Representing Watertown during his previous term, Callies proved to be an effective legislator, successfully getting legislation signed by Governor Noem.
Unlike his current successor, who failed to pass any bills during the last session and struggled as a committee chairman, Callies demonstrated strong leadership and legislative skills. During his time in office, he served on several key committees, including the House Commerce & Energy Committee, the House Education Committee, and the House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
Beyond his legislative work, Callies brings a wealth of experience from his professional and military background. He spent 10 years as a college professor and dedicated nearly 41 years to the National Guard, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 2006. Additionally, he has held the prestigious position of national vice-commander of the American Legion, an organization representing two million members.
With a proven track record and deep commitment to public service, Byron Callies aims to continue serving his community and making a positive impact in the South Dakota legislature.
