Rivian’s Upcoming R2: What to Expect from the Dual-Motor All-Wheel-Drive Variant

Rivian is gearing up to launch the R2, a new electric SUV that promises to be a well-appointed, dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant. According to Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe, the company plans to hold an R2 event early next year to showcase the full portfolio of R2 products.

“We’re going to limit the number of variants that we’re building, and so we have a launch edition for the R2,” Scaringe explained. “This is a classic challenge, because there are thousands and thousands of people who are excited for the R2. Some will want the most basic, lowest-price version, while others will want the highest-end version. I’ll say that it’s a dual-motor variant, and it’s well-appointed, but it’s not intended to be our most expensive version. It is intended to be a very nicely set-up vehicle, which we think will make the most people the most happy.”

Many electric vehicles debut in their most expensive configurations before introducing lower-priced variants. For example, the Tesla Cybertruck launched with an inaugural Foundation Series model priced around $100,000, with more affordable versions following shortly after. Similarly, the Lucid Gravity Grand Touring starts at about $122,000 with options.

As the R2 ramps up production, Scaringe confirmed that more variants will follow—likely including both higher and lower-end models. Importantly, he emphasized that Rivian is holding firm on the vehicle’s pricing, which is expected to be well below the $70,000 starting prices of the R1S and R1T. Many of those models often sell for close to $100,000 or more, so this more accessible pricing will be key to making the R2 a mainstream SUV that more people can afford.

While official specifications remain limited, here’s what is currently known about the R2:

– It will be available in Single-, Dual-, and Tri-motor variations.
– Single-motor models will feature rear-wheel drive.
– Dual- and Tri-motor configurations will offer all-wheel drive.
– At least two battery sizes will be offered.
– An EPA-rated range of over 300 miles is expected.

Stay tuned for Rivian’s upcoming R2 event early next year, where more details will be revealed.
