There’s been a notable hitch in Rockstar Games’ plans this week as the developer continues work on Grand Theft Auto 6. Recently, Rockstar laid off over 30 employees. While the company claims the layoffs were due to “gross misconduct,” a labor group has alleged that the cuts were actually related to union activity.

Bloomberg initially reported the layoffs before the weekend, noting the termination of “between 30 and 40 people” as more details emerged. Following this, the IWGB Game Workers group released a statement on social media condemning Rockstar for its actions, providing further insight into the situation.

Most of the gaming world has been eagerly awaiting Grand Theft Auto 6, with Rockstar targeting a release date in May 2026. The game has already experienced a couple of delays, and this recent controversy could potentially lead to another delay—or at least serve as the explanation for one.

Set to return to the Florida-inspired Vice City, fans are expecting Grand Theft Auto 6 to deliver an exaggerated, over-the-top social commentary, maintaining the series’ tradition of sharp, satirical storytelling.
