A recent NBC News poll reveals growing frustration among Americans regarding President Donald Trump’s handling of the economy, less than a year after he took office.
In a survey of 1,000 voters conducted between October 25 and 28, 63% said Trump had fallen short of their expectations concerning the economy. Additionally, 65% felt he had failed to adequately support the middle class, and 66% expressed similar disappointment regarding his management of inflation and the cost of living.
President Trump’s overall approval rating in the poll has dropped by four points since March, falling to 43%. Meanwhile, 55% of respondents disapprove of his job performance.
This dissatisfaction appears to be extending to Republican lawmakers as well. With just one year remaining before the 2026 midterm elections, Democrats are currently favored to take control of Congress, leading by an 8-point margin—50% to 42%—among those surveyed. By comparison, Democrats held only a one-point lead, 48% to 47%, in the March poll.
The survey results come amid an ongoing government shutdown that has lasted more than a month, impacting critical programs such as SNAP food benefits.
When asked which party would better handle the economy, voters were nearly evenly divided. According to the poll, 38% believe Republicans would do a better job, while 37% favored Democrats.
These findings align with a recent CNBC All-America Economic Survey, which also showed increasingly negative views of the U.S. economy.
