The Miami Dolphins and general manager Chris Grier decided to part ways a day after their loss to the Baltimore Ravens, marking what could be the beginning of a significant shakeup for the franchise.
The Dolphins have struggled this season, winning only two games so far. With the trade deadline approaching, much attention will be on whether any players are moved. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, several Dolphins players have already attracted trade interest in recent weeks.
“Players the Dolphins received trade calls on, but were unwilling to deal in recent weeks include: WR Jaylen Waddle, OLB Jaelan Phillips, OLB Bradley Chubb, OLB Matthew Judon, CB Rasul Douglas. With a 2-7 record and a new interim GM, teams are certain to check back in starting today,” Pelissero wrote.
At this point, the outlook doesn’t seem very optimistic. It wouldn’t be surprising if the interim general manager decides to make some changes to shake things up. However, one factor that may suggest the team remains steady at the deadline is the status of head coach Mike McDaniel.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, McDaniel has not been fired and is expected to remain the head coach for at least the rest of the season. This implies that while management changes are underway, the coaching staff will largely stay intact in the short term.
The offseason, however, may bring significant changes for the Dolphins both in coaching and player personnel. For now, the best approach is to continue competing hard and trying to win as many games as possible.
If the Dolphins can find a way to go on a winning run before the end of the season, they may limit drastic changes during the offseason. On the other hand, if losing continues to plague them, the franchise could look quite different next year.
