The motorcycle rider accused of killing a sheriff’s deputy before leading officers on a high-speed chase in Southern California has been identified as Angelo Jose Saldivar, 47.
According to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Saldivar crashed his motorcycle while fleeing from officers after allegedly shooting the deputy, who had responded to a domestic violence call.
The slain officer, 28-year-old Andrew Nunez, was shot in the head and later pronounced dead at a hospital. Nunez leaves behind a pregnant wife and a 2-year-old daughter.
Nunez and a partner had responded to a report of an armed man threatening a woman in the town of Rancho Cucamonga. Upon arrival, Saldivar allegedly turned his gun on Deputy Nunez, shooting him in the head before escaping on a motorcycle.
Saldivar then sped down the freeway reaching speeds up to 170 miles per hour. The high-speed chase ended when he crashed into an unmarked police car that had cut him off.
“A narcotics deputy in an unmarked Sheriff’s Department vehicle conducted a pursuit intervention technique and collided with the suspect,” the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said.
After the collision, Saldivar was thrown off his bike and slid on the ground before being surrounded and apprehended by officers.
Charges against Saldivar are expected to be filed on Tuesday night. San Bernardino District Attorney Jason Anderson said his office is considering charging the suspect with the murder of a peace officer.
Sheriff Shannon Dicus held a press conference on Monday, sharing details about Deputy Nunez and his family. “We’re embedded in sorrow,” Dicus said, noting that Nunez leaves behind his wife, who was pregnant with their second child, a 2-year-old daughter, his mother, and four siblings.
Nunez was a six-year veteran of the department. “Deputy Nunez served with unwavering commitment, courage, and deep compassion for the community he vowed to protect,” stated the sheriff’s office. “His bravery and sacrifice reflect a life dedicated to safeguarding others, even at the greatest cost. Such devotion will remain forever etched in our hearts.”
The suspect is currently in stable condition at a local hospital. Authorities confirmed that Saldivar has no prior criminal record.
