LSU has made the decision to fire their head coach Brian Kelly. This move comes after the Tigers’ blowout defeat against Texas A&M, which prompted LSU executives to hold a meeting on Sunday to discuss Kelly’s future with the program.
According to Yahoo Sports and On3 Sports reporter Ross Dellenger, “LSU administrators and university executives have held and are holding high-level discussions over the future of football coach Brian Kelly. While there is no immediate resolution, the conversations—which involve the state’s governor—are ongoing.”
The situation in Baton Rouge is further complicated by the university’s ongoing search for a permanent president, with five finalists recently announced. In the absence of a president, Governor Jeff Landry has become a key figure in the discussions. It is expected that Landry has already met, or will meet soon, with key donors and board members to weigh in on the matter.
Tensions escalated when Kelly and LSU athletic director Scott Woodward had a meeting to discuss potential firings among the coaching staff. OutKick’s Trey Wallace provided more details about the encounter: “When Brian Kelly arrived at the LSU facility on Sunday morning, he was going through a list of assistant coaches that could potentially be fired. That led to a meeting with Scott Woodward, where both sides presented a case as to who should be let go.”
Wallace added, “It was at that moment that the relationship took a turn. Kelly immediately left the facility after that meeting, which is when AD Scott Woodward informed assistant coaches that they should go home for the day.”
Following the meeting, Governor Jeff Landry was contacted to discuss the buyout situation and whether its cost would be manageable for LSU.
Hours later, Pete Nakos from On3 reported that Brian Kelly had officially been fired by LSU. Frank Wilson will be stepping in as the new head coach, according to Nakos.
This marks a significant shift for LSU as the program looks to reset and move forward under new leadership.
