Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, and former NBA player Damon Jones were arrested Thursday over their alleged participation in two major illegal gambling schemes. One scheme involved bets placed on NBA games, while the other revolved around underground poker games investigated by the FBI.
According to Joseph Nocella, the interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, these schemes involved collaboration with organized crime groups. NBA “insiders” such as Rozier and Jones reportedly passed along confidential information in exchange for a share of the proceeds. “They relied on corrupt individuals, including Jones and Rozier. They also misused information obtained during long-standing friendships they had with NBA players and coaches,” Nocella stated.
However, commentator Stephen A. Smith suggests there may be something more nefarious at play. He claims that President Trump is orchestrating a conspiracy of criminal investigations targeting cultural sports largely associated with Black Americans. Smith noted that the NBA, NFL, and WNBA could all be targets of a vast FBI sting operation aimed at people of color involved in sports and criminal activity.
There is also speculation about the possible involvement of Russians in the setup.
