Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced he would pause an anti-tariff advertising campaign featuring former President Ronald Reagan after President Donald Trump halted trade negotiations with Canada.

The campaign included portions of a five-minute speech in which Reagan criticized tariffs and praised free trade. President Trump called the campaign “fake” and took to Truth Social to declare, “ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”

Despite the president’s comments, Ford stated that the advertisement would air throughout the weekend before being paused.

“Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses,” Ford said in a statement. “We’ve achieved our goal, having reached U.S. audiences at the highest levels.”

He added, “I’ve directed my team to keep putting our message in front of Americans over the weekend so that we can air our commercial during the first two World Series games.”

In discussions with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Chief of Staff, Ford said Ontario would pause its U.S. advertising campaign effective Monday to allow trade talks to resume.

“Let’s work together to build Fortress Am-Can and make our two countries stronger, more prosperous, and more secure,” he concluded.
