Pokemon Legends Z-A Ending Explained: The Aftermath of Kalos and AZ’s Final Chapter

The ending of Pokemon Legends Z-A is straightforward, though its events are deeply tied to the mainline title Pokemon X and Y. Set in Kalos Region’s iconic Lumiose City, and once again featuring the Mega Evolution mechanic, Legends Z-A explores the aftermath of Team Flare’s use of the Ultimate Weapon and ties up the story of AZ.

While Team Flare isn’t as active as before, Lumiose City is threatened by an even greater menace. Our protagonist and their friends must work together — with the help of Zygarde — to avert disaster. This article breaks down the ending of Pokemon Legends Z-A, which also serves as a conclusion to the Pokemon X and Y storyline.

The Ending: Sins of the Past Haunt Lumiose City

The story centers around three main pillars: the Prism Tower (also known as Ange), Zygarde, and AZ. Located at the heart of Lumiose City, the Prism Tower is managed by Quasartico Inc., which creates and oversees Wild Zones to promote harmony between people and Pokémon in the city.

If you have played Pokemon X and Y, you will recognize AZ, a legendary figure in Kalos history. Zygarde is the region’s guardian Pokémon, maintaining balance. Early in Legends Z-A, players also encounter Lysandre, Team Flare’s former leader, who claims to be the voice of Zygarde and works alongside the legendary Pokémon while warning of dark events soon to befall Lumiose City.

Lysandre cryptically references a “3000-year-old man” who must repay for his sins. As the story nears its climax, AZ reveals his tragic past, opening up to everyone gathered: “Then I shall tell you of the terrible sins I have committed and of my regrets.”

AZ’s Story: A 3000-Year-Old Regret

Three thousand years ago, a massive war engulfed the world, and many Pokémon lost their lives trying to end the conflict. Among them was AZ’s Floette, who fell on the battlefield. Stricken with grief, AZ created a mysterious machine to grant life itself, aiming to resurrect Floette.

Though he succeeded, his sorrow turned to anger at those responsible for the war. In his rage, AZ altered the machine into the Ultimate Weapon — an instrument of destruction that rained fire down upon the earth, ending the senseless conflict by becoming destruction incarnate.

“In my rage, I remade my device into the ultimate weapon. I put an end to the senseless conflict that would have taken everything from us. By becoming destruction itself.”

AZ further explained the weapon’s terrifying power: “The light fired from the ultimate weapon reached the heavens, then poured down, burning away all that rested upon the earth.”

The device that revived Floette came with a terrible price — the life it gave was stolen from countless other Pokémon. Sensing this imbalance, Floette eventually left AZ, causing him to wander alone for 3000 years.

The Creation of Ange

During his centuries of exile, AZ was approached by a noble man who asked for help in protecting Kalos. AZ, still weighed down by his regrets, designed a new machine — one that would share eternal life, rather than take it. This device became the Prism Tower’s core: Ange.

“I cannot make another device that would take from others. But perhaps I could make one that would share the eternal life that I had bestowed on Floette. That is what Ange is. That is what is hidden deep within Prism Tower.”

AZ saw Ange as a way to atone for the burden he had placed on Floette by granting her eternal life. Though he reunited with Floette, Ange never saw the light of day — the world remained peaceful, and there was no need for such power.

Why Ange Went Berserk Without Mega Floette

Ange was designed to operate with Mega Floette as its guiding force. Without her, Ange should have remained dormant and harmless. Yet the city suffered an outbreak of Rogue Mega Evolutions, which AZ suspected were caused by the Prism Tower itself.

He theorized: “The tower is emitting excessive amounts of Mega Power, even without Mega Floette present. This is only conjecture on my part, but I believe it may be related to the ultimate weapon being fired five years ago. That shock awoke Ange and has caused the Mega Power contained within it to spill forth.”

This ties Legends Z-A directly to the events of Pokemon X and Y, taking place five years later. The firing of the Ultimate Weapon triggered Ange to go rogue, unleashing Mega Power that forces involuntary Rogue Mega Evolutions, threatening both Lumiose City’s citizens and Pokémon.

The Greatest Mega Evolution User

With Ange swelling and leaking unstable Mega Power, AZ reveals the only way to stop it: “A Mega Evolution user must Mega Evolve Floette and together reach the control panel within Ange.”

Later that night, an explosion partially collapses the Prism Tower. Team MZ rushes to the scene to calm Ange. The protagonist and their rival engage in a battle to determine who is the city’s greatest Mega Evolution user. Although the protagonist emerges victorious, it is their rival—Taunie or Urbain—who is entrusted with Mega Evolving Floette and proceeding to Ange’s control panel.

Zygarde only trusts the protagonist and must protect the city, so it allows this transfer of responsibility. As Mega Floette enters Ange’s control panel, she seemingly calms the tower’s rogue powers—at least for a moment.

Hyperrogue Ange Floette Emerges

Just as the light from the Prism Tower fades, it suddenly flares back to life. The tower transforms into a bio-mechanical giant known as Hyperrogue Ange Floette.

This terrifying entity wields Mega Floette’s signature move Light of Ruin and threatens to destroy Lumiose City. The protagonist sets out to confront this calamity, navigating through a city rife with Rogue Mega Evolved Pokémon.

Top trainers of Lumiose City—including Corbeau, Canari, Ivor and his sister Jacinthe, Lebanne, and even Grisham and Griselle of Team Flare Nouveau—join forces to help combat the crisis.

Complete Zygarde and Mega Zygarde’s Intervention

The protagonist finally finds Zygarde, initially in its 10% Forme. Every Zygarde cell rushes to the Pokémon, including the last cell held by the protagonist, allowing Zygarde to assume its Complete Form.

Zygarde engages Hyperrogue Ange Floette in a fierce battle, while the trainer fends off two threatening flowers emitted by the giant tower. After a tough fight, Zygarde’s Core Enforcer move appears to calm Ange, causing the tower to lose its movement and light.

However, the victory is short-lived as an Ange flower bursts free from its restraints to launch a massive Light of Ruin attack.

At this critical moment, the pebble given to the protagonist by Zygarde transforms into the Zygardite—Zygarde’s Mega Stone. The protagonist Mega Evolves Zygarde, who uses the powerful new move Nihil Light to completely negate Ange’s attack and put the tower to rest once and for all.

AZ’s Farewell

Watching the battle from the rooftop of Hotel AZ, AZ breathes a sigh of relief and offers his final gratitude: “I will forever be grateful to you. Team MZ, my dear friends.”

In a touching scene, AZ’s grave is shown surrounded by the members of Team MZ. Lysandre stands quietly, reflecting: “For three thousand long years, he bid farewell to so many. And now, we bid farewell to him.”

The protagonist also pauses at AZ’s grave, adorned with flowers of every Floette color. Team MZ then decides to continue operating out of Hotel MZ to protect the people and Pokémon of Lumiose City.

Thus, the main story of Pokemon Legends Z-A concludes.

What Happens After the Final Battle?

Zygarde disappears after the fight, and Lysandre suspects the Pokémon is recovering its energy elsewhere. He also reminds the trainer of the two other major legendary Pokémon of Kalos: Xerneas, the life-giver, and Yveltal, the taker. The player is encouraged to seek out and capture these powerful beings as the additional story of Legends Z-A continues.
