In a separate statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it will provide an update later on Monday regarding the situation involving the recalled U.S. ambassador.
This development follows recent U.S. military strikes on alleged drug-carrying vessels affiliated with Venezuela and Colombia, operating in the Caribbean region en route to the United States. The Trump administration has confirmed seven such strikes, with the latest targeting a boat operated by a designated terrorist organization from Colombia. All three individuals aboard the vessel—referred to as “narco-terrorists” by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth—were killed in the strike.
While President Trump maintains that the U.S. military’s actions are aimed solely at eliminating terrorists and drug traffickers, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has expressed a different view. Petro accused the U.S. of killing a fisherman in one of the strikes last month, an allegation that preceded Trump’s fiery response on Sunday.
“President Gustavo Petro, of Colombia, is an illegal drug leader strongly encouraging the massive production of drugs, in big and small fields, all over Colombia,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It has become the biggest business in Colombia, by far, and Petro does nothing to stop it, despite large-scale payments and subsidies from the USA that are nothing more than a long-term rip-off of America.”
Trump then announced his intention to withdraw subsidies from Colombia as punishment for allegedly facilitating drug production. He also urged President Petro to shut down the drug fields, warning that if he fails to do so, the U.S. will take direct action by force.
### Trump Teases New Colombia Tariff Over Drug Trafficking
Regarding the threatened tariffs, Trump did not provide many details but stated that he would announce the specific tariff rate sometime on Monday. Currently, Colombia pays a 10% tariff, which Trump initially imposed in April.
In a related incident, another recent U.S. strike targeted a drug-carrying submarine, resulting in the deaths of two individuals aboard. The two survivors—one from Ecuador and the other from Colombia—were repatriated to their respective countries.
