A career spanning almost four decades came to an end at Rare this week as longtime employee and Sea of Thieves director Gregg Mayles announced his departure from the company.

Mayles has been working at Rare for about 36 years and 10 months, during which he contributed to many beloved franchises including Donkey Kong Country, Viva Piñata, Battletoads, Banjo Kazooie, and more.

He announced his departure in a post on his social media channels this week. In the post, Mayles expressed his gratitude to fans for playing his games and thanked his team for their unwavering support. Notably, he shared an extensive and heartfelt rhyme dedicated to his many years at Rare—a fitting tribute given his long and impactful career.

According to his page on MobyGames, Mayles’ journey with Rare began in 1991 when he worked on Battletoads. Over the years, he showcased his versatility by contributing to game design, art design, producing, and ultimately directing a wide array of titles.

Most recently, Mayles applied his talents as the director of Sea of Thieves, Rare’s flagship live-service game that continues to thrive with 17 ongoing seasons.

Gregg Mayles’ departure marks the end of an era for Rare, but his legacy will undoubtedly continue to influence the company’s future projects and the broader gaming community.
