Beijing claims PH fishers may ruin its Scarborough ‘nature reserve’
MANILA, Philippines — For the first time since Beijing’s declaration, the China Coast Guard (CCG) has been broadcasting radio challenges to assert its unilateral “nature reserve” claim in Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal. These broadcasts are specifically targeting Filipino fishermen operating in the area, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported on Monday.
The PCG documented these radio challenges during operations involving its ships and personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries. The move marks a significant escalation in tensions over the disputed waters, with the CCG using communication channels to enforce its claims unilaterally.
