England spinner Sophie Ecclestone delivered a match-winning performance against Sri Lanka in Match 12 of the ICC Women’s World Cup. Chasing a target of 254, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 164 in 45.4 overs, with Ecclestone starring with the ball.
Ecclestone’s bowling figures were outstanding—4 wickets for just 17 runs in her 10 overs, including 3 maidens. Introduced in the 19th over, she immediately made an impact, starting with the wicket of Hasini Perera. She set a perfect tone with a wicket-maiden over.
Her next victims included Harshitha Samarawickrama, who was caught while attempting a pull shot, followed by Kavisha Dilhari, who was bowled. Ecclestone’s final scalp of the day was Chamari Athapaththu, dismissed by a brilliant delivery that completely bamboozled the batter.
This four-wicket haul marks Ecclestone’s 4th four-fer in Women’s One Day Internationals (WODIs). Over the course of the 12 matches in this World Cup, she has claimed 30 wickets at an impressive average of 12.93. Ecclestone has now climbed to become the 4th-highest wicket-taker for England in the Women’s World Cup, surpassing both K. Smithies and Katherine Sciver-Brunt, who each had 29 wickets.
Overall, Ecclestone has accumulated 134 wickets in WODIs from 78 matches, with a career bowling average of 18.91. Her brilliant spell against Sri Lanka further cements her status as one of the premier spinners in women’s cricket.
