Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, has once again found herself amid controversy. The latest backlash sparked after Markle posted a video on her Instagram Stories, showing her car passing by the Pont Alexandre III and Pont des Invalides in Paris. The route appeared to pass near the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, the location where Princess Diana was fatally injured in a car accident on August 31, 1997.
### Social Media Reaction
The video quickly caught the attention of social media users, many of whom reacted negatively. On X (formerly Twitter), one user wrote, “If driving toward Princess Diana’s death scene is a message to Prince William, then Meghan Markle is the devil.” Another questioned, “Why would she film the place his mother died? Moreover, why would she post it on social media for the world to see? Why?”
### Expert Opinion: Royal Analyst Calls Video ‘Insensitive’
Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams weighed in on the controversy, describing Markle’s video as “utterly bewildering” and “insensitive beyond belief.” Speaking to the *Daily Mail*, he expressed confusion over her actions, saying, “I don’t understand what on earth she was thinking, well, she can’t have been thinking. No adviser would ever advise doing something so strange.”
Fitzwilliams further emphasized the lasting impact of Diana’s death on her family, noting, “Diana’s death scarred so much of Harry’s life,” and he could not imagine the Duke of Sussex finding the post “very appropriate.”
### Revisiting the Tragic Death of Princess Diana
Princess Diana was only 36 when she tragically died in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel in Paris. The crash involved her driver, Henri Paul, who was found to have alcohol and prescription drugs in his system. He was allegedly speeding in an attempt to evade paparazzi on motorbikes. The Mercedes-Benz they were in crashed into a pillar inside the tunnel.
Diana was rushed to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. At the time, Princes William and Harry were just 15 and 12 years old, respectively.
