Lack Of Afro – Love Dealer

Following umpteen albums of 70s funk forgeries, Lack Of Afro has progressed from copying The JBs to ripping off The Bee Gees. Or, as Exeter-based producer Adam Gibbons would probably prefer to put it, paying tribute to the hardworking session musicians who played on The Bee Gees’ and other superstars’ biggest disco hits — but who, much like Gibbons himself, you probably wouldn’t recognise if you bumped into them on a flashing dancefloor.

As much a pastiche as a paean to the glitterball glamour of disco’s halcyon age, tracks like “Everybody” would have sounded retro 30 years ago. However, there are also plenty of occasions—such as on “Love Saves The Day” or “Plain To See”—when Gibbons captures the sense of excitement of heading out on a Saturday night that definitely didn’t die in 1979.
