The Indian women’s cricket team has got off to a flying start at the Women’s World Cup 2025, clinching back-to-back victories against Sri Lanka and Pakistan. Amidst this momentum, star batter Jemimah Rodrigues has expressed the team’s heartfelt motivation — winning the trophy for all the pioneers who laid the foundation of women’s cricket in India.
### Stellar Start to the Campaign
India recently defeated their arch-rivals Pakistan by a commanding margin of 88 runs at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. This win has not only boosted their confidence but also propelled them to the top of the points table with four points from two matches.
### Team Spirit and Unity
Praising the leadership of captain Harmanpreet Kaur and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, Rodrigues highlighted the incredible team spirit within the squad. “We have created such an environment that everyone will go out there and give their lives out,” she said.
### Honouring the Pioneers
Rodrigues made it clear that the team’s aspirations go beyond immediate success. “Yeah, I mean, first it was Mithu di (Mithali Raj) and Julhu di (Jhulan Goswami). I remember when I entered the team,” she recalled fondly.
The batter added, “We want to do it also for them, for Mithu di, for Jhulu di, for Neetu David ma’am, for all those people who have brought women’s cricket to where it is today.”
### Match Highlights: Strong Batting Display
After a disappointing golden duck against Sri Lanka, Rodrigues bounced back with a solid 32 runs off 37 balls against Pakistan. She struck five fours and played crucial partnerships with Harmanpreet Kaur (19 off 34) and Harleen Deol (46 off 65).
Thanks to Rodrigues’ steady innings and Richa Ghosh’s explosive late cameo (35 off 20), India posted a competitive total of 247 runs in their allotted overs.
### Bowling Brilliance Seals the Win
India’s bowlers complemented the batting performance brilliantly. Kranti Gaud was named Player of the Match for her exceptional figures of 3 wickets for 20 runs. Deepti Sharma also bowled impressively, claiming three wickets while conceding just 45 runs in 9 overs.
For Pakistan, Sidra Amin top-scored with 81 runs off 106 balls but was unable to prevent her team from being bowled out for 159 runs.
### Looking Ahead
With two wins from as many games, India now leads the points table and will be eager to continue their winning streak. The Women in Blue will next face South Africa on October 9 in Visakhapatnam, with the same determination to honor the legacy of Indian women’s cricket pioneers.
