Indian Navy to commission second ASW, Androth, on Oct 6
The Indian Navy is set to commission *Androth*, the second Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC), at a special ceremony on October 6, 2025, at the Naval Dockyard in Visakhapatnam, an official statement said on Sunday.
The event will be led by Vice Admiral Rajesh Pendharkar, the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Naval Command, the statement added.
*Androth* has been built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata and represents a major step forward in India’s efforts to build its own defence equipment. The ship is more than 80 percent made in India, showcasing strong progress towards self-reliance in defence, also known as Aatmanirbharta.
This new ship will significantly boost the Indian Navy’s capability to track and combat enemy submarines, particularly in shallow and coastal waters. It also underscores the Navy’s focus on integrating new technology and strengthening Indian-made solutions.
The induction of *Androth* follows the recent addition of other modern ships such as *Arnala*, *Nistar*, *Udaygiri*, and *Nilgiri*. Together, these vessels demonstrate the Navy’s balanced growth across various naval operations and highlight India’s robust shipbuilding industry.
With *Androth*, the Navy continues to advance its goals of indigenisation, innovation, and enhanced defence capability at sea, the statement concluded.
