At least six people have lost their lives in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district following a devastating landslide in Mirik. The natural disaster also caused the collapse of the Dudia Iron Bridge, a critical link connecting Mirik and Kurseong.
**Severe Weather and Infrastructure Impact**
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in several districts including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Cooch Behar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, expected to continue until Sunday morning.
The heavy rains have triggered multiple landslides affecting vital roadways. One landslide occurred at Hussain Khola along National Highway 110 near Kurseong, while another on National Highway 717E between Pedong and Rishikhola has cut off the important road connecting Siliguri to Sikkim.
Additionally, the IMD’s bulletin forecasts continued heavy rainfall till Monday morning, particularly in Alipurduar, neighboring Darjeeling.
**Official Response**
Expressing his concern over the situation, Bharatiya Janata Party MP Raju Bista took to X (formerly Twitter), stating, “I am extremely anguished to learn about the massive damages caused due to extremely heavy rainfall in many parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts.” He assured that necessary assistance would be provided to those affected by the calamity.
**Weather Alerts and Safety Advisories**
The IMD has also issued an orange alert for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Coochbehar on October 5. Alipurduar remains under a red alert, while yellow alerts are in place for North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts.
Residents have been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or electric poles due to the heightened risk of falling branches and poles during the ongoing severe weather conditions.
