‘Woh Expression Change Kar Sakta Hai’: Abhishek Sharma Narrates Tale Of Shubman Gill’s Mischief From Their U-16 Days; Video
Team India star Abhishek Sharma recently shared a hilarious incident involving teammate Shubman Gill from their U16 days. The left-handed batter revealed that Gill possesses a unique talent for quickly changing his expressions, which helped him avoid getting caught despite committing mischief.
Gill and Abhishek have been playing alongside each other since their junior days and most recently opened the innings together in the Asia Cup 2025, forging a fearsome partnership. While Gill couldn’t quite stamp his authority in the tournament, Abhishek thrived and finished as the highest run-getter with 314 runs.
Speaking to Gaurav Kapoor during *Breakfast with Champions*, Abhishek recalled,
“Main age group mein shaitaaniyan karke kabhi nahin fasa hoon. Woh hai Shubman. Aapko main ek incident batata hoon. Hum Dharamshala mein they U-16 team mein. Himachal ke, Delhi ke, Punjab ke sab mil gaye hain. Humaara hotel sirf 500 meter door tha Dharamsala stadium se. Usme bhi hum bus se jaate they. Driver gaane bandh kar diya tha, humne gaane laga diye Punjabi. Usne kaha nahin lagaane hain gaane toh behas ho gayi. Sabse zyaada jisne cheekha peeche se woh hai Shubman tha.”
(As a kid, there was only one kid who never got caught doing mischief — that was Shubman. I’ll tell you about an incident. We were in Dharamsala during our U16 days, with kids from Himachal Pradesh, Delhi, and Punjab all together. Our hotel was just 500 meters from the Dharamsala stadium. We used to take a bus to the stadium. The driver stopped the music, but we played Punjabi songs instead. The driver said he didn’t want to play the songs, and an argument broke out. The loudest voice shouting from the back was Shubman’s.)
The incident escalated to the coaches. Several drivers approached them and complained, “Your kids have misbehaved.” The coaches asked who was involved. Abhishek, Prabh, and a fifth player, along with Shubman, were named. However, the coaches deliberately left out Shubman’s name.
Abhishek added,
“Hum 4 ko bahar bulaake, ‘yeh letter hai, is pe sign karo.’ Letter thi vapas ghar bhejne. Mujhe dukh hua yeh kaise bahar nahin aaya, jiski vajah se hum yahan khade hain. Usme woh talent hai ki woh expression change kar sakta hai.”
(They called the four of us out and handed us a letter to sign that meant we would be sent back home. I was sad about being sent back, but more sad that Shubman, the one actually responsible for the trouble, escaped. That’s the talent he has — the ability to change his expression.)
