Data Corner: Germany leads Europe in digital agriculture patents

As digital agriculture reshapes farming worldwide with smarter, data-driven tools, Germany stands out in Europe as the top source of patents. This insight comes from a recent study conducted by the European Patent Office (EPO).

Since 2012, innovation in digital agriculture has accelerated significantly. Patent filings in key fields such as artificial intelligence (AI), sensing, and automation have grown at an average rate of 9.4% per year. This growth rate outpaces the overall patent activity across all other technology sectors combined.

“Digital agriculture is advancing at an unprecedented pace, reshaping how we produce food in the face of pressing global challenges,” said EPO president Antonio Campinos. He emphasized the urgent need to ensure food security for the coming years, highlighting the vital role of technological innovation in addressing these challenges.
