SAP SE has announced new partnerships with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) aimed at strengthening its “digital sovereignty” offerings for European governments. This move aligns with a broader trend among European nations to develop sovereign AI services, addressing concerns over losing control of critical technology.
As Europe’s largest software company, SAP has committed approximately €20 billion ($23.5 billion) toward building these sovereign services. The initiative, called “OpenAI for Germany,” will be delivered through SAP’s Delos Cloud—a cloud solution designed to store data locally and ensure full compliance with European laws and regulations.
**Business Adaptation in the Age of AI**
SAP has spent several years preparing its software business to meet the growing demands of cloud computing. The company is now extending this focus to the era of generative AI. Its cloud sales are projected to reach nearly €22 billion, almost three times the amount reported in 2019.
While SAP does not disclose specific sales figures for its Delos Cloud, the service runs on Microsoft’s Azure platform, integrating robust cloud infrastructure with localized, compliant solutions for government clients.
This strategic collaboration marks a significant step toward empowering European governments with AI capabilities that respect data sovereignty and regulatory standards.
