SAP SE has announced new partnerships with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) to enhance its “digital sovereignty” offerings aimed at European governments. This initiative aligns with a broader movement across Europe to develop sovereign AI services in response to growing concerns about maintaining control over critical technologies.
As Europe’s largest software company, SAP has committed approximately €20 billion ($23.5 billion) towards building these sovereign solutions. The program, called “OpenAI for Germany,” will be delivered through SAP’s Delos Cloud platform. This cloud solution ensures that all data remains stored locally, fully complying with European data protection laws.
Over recent years, SAP has been actively transforming its software business to meet the demands of cloud computing. The company is now applying this expertise to the emerging era of generative AI. SAP’s cloud sales are projected to reach nearly €22 billion, nearly triple the figures reported in 2019.
While SAP does not disclose specific sales figures for Delos Cloud, it is known that the platform operates on Microsoft’s Azure infrastructure, signaling strong industry collaboration.
This move underscores the growing importance of trusted, locally controlled AI services for European governments amid the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence technologies.
